3 Ways To Stop Procrastination

I want to start by saying thank you for allowing me to take this break and waiting for me. After all this social injustice happening in this country. which I want to disclose, it's been happening for centuries, they’re just now giving it the attention it deserves, which is a whole other conversation. Anyway, after the Aumaud Aubery, Geroge Floyd, Breanna Taylor murders, I was really affected, so I took some time off to really reflect on what is going on in this country and what I can do to contribute and help. That’s a journey I'll go through on another episode, but something happened in between me getting my mind right and me wanting to start the next season. To be honest, I got lazy. Well, let me explain, it's not that I got lazy, but I kept pushing the podcast start date back further and further. and I'm not going to lie, I had my reasons, but if I wanted to be honest with myself, I was just procrastinating; Which leads us to this post.
Procrastination is the enemy of success. It’s the enemy of productivity, and for you to be as successful as you want to be, you really don't have a lot of time to procrastinate. There's always someone going after what's yours, and with everything going on with COVID-19, with being laid off, getting an extra $600 of unemployment a week, and just being happy to spend more time with your family; it's hard not to get caught up. Why look for a job, when you're getting paid more money to stay home, and not to mention COVID-19 is out there so why not stay home?
This is why I want to talk about productivity and procrastination. I don't think there's anything wrong with staying home or enjoying time with your family. But I ask, what are you doing with all your free time when you are not hanging out with them? Are you being productive, are you hustling to make more money?
I want to give you some advice on how to get over procrastination and how to get up and just go get it.
Here are the three ways I want to discuss on how to get over procrastinating.

And Deep Work
And I want to clarify. My goal is to make you feel uncomfortable about binge-watching Queen of the South, which is what I did, and go do something that is going to make you money.
SCREW PASSION AND MOTIVATION
What do I mean about that? A lot of us including me run on passion and drive. There are times that I sit and wait for that passion and motivation to just push me to get up and go do my best work. And if you're anything like me, I want to let you know, we got it backward. We shouldn’t let our driving passion lead us to be productive, we need to take action, and when you start the action, that’s when passion, drive, and motivation will follow. Do you know who understands this concept best? People that go to the gym. You know those gym heads that are all ripped and are like “ I gotta go work out by any means.” They love working out, but they don't love the action of going to work out. What I mean by that is that they literally have to rearrange their schedule to make time for the gym. So they can't hang out with you because they have to go to the gym and then make time to hang out. What I'm trying to say is that their mind tells them that they want to hang out, but they force themselves to walk to the gym. And when they do that first bench press, That's when the passion and motivation kicks in.
So, to clarify, if you're sitting around and you're waiting for that motivation to kick in and push you to take action; it's not. You have to do the action first, Apply for the job, Sign up for college, or do whatever you need to do to level up. That thing that you've been stalling on or those top three things that you've been waiting to do later; do it first, and then the passion will follow. I promise.
THE 5-SECOND RULE
Now, this 5-second is credited to Mel Robbins, who is this awesome motivational coach. She has this famous YOUTUBE video that you have to watch. Now as per Mel Robbins “ You have about a 5-Second window, in which you can move from idea to action before your brain kicks into full gear and sabotages any change in behavior because your brain is wired to stop you from doing anything uncomfortable, or uncertain, or scary.”
With this concept, you have to understand the power of decision making. You have to understand that when you're laying in bed you have the option to either get up and start your day early or lay in bed longer. Which one is going to make you more successful, more productive, more money? With this concept, you have to know when you're making that choice to get up and go or chill and relax. And when you know you're at that point when you are about to make that decision, is when you apply the 5-second rule. Because the truth is that you typically know what you need to do. The problem is that what you really want to do is chill and relax.
Okay, so what exactly is the Mel Robbins 5 second rule? The five-second rule is when you're at that point in making a decision between what you need to do and what you want to do and instead of thinking about it, you count backwards 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... and you just do the thing you HAVE to do. So for example, if you know you haven't done your budget all month to see where you are financially, because like… who wants to do their budget right? Lol – Count backward 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... and just go do it. I know this sounds cheesy, but it’s something I’ve personally seen people apply in their life and it’s made them so productive. You can use this concept to finally open that online savings account you said you were going to do, or to buy that stock you’ve been thinking about. Now I’m doing my best to explain it, but, please take the time to check out Mel Robbins’ YouTube video called “Use This to control your brain.”
The last concept I want to talk about is called “Deep Work” by Cal Newport. Well, Cal Newport didn't create the concept, but he wrote this really good book I’m reading now called Deep Work. This concept is exactly what it sounds like, but there's just a little bit more to it. I'm actually using the concept now two write this post.
Now I'll be oversimplifying this as well, but the Deep Work concept is based on taking on a task or a project and putting all your focus on just that one task.
I've been talking about applying for jobs a lot on this post because after losing the $600 a week, or if you were laid off, this is the position you're in right now. But this concept applies to any task. So to stick to my example, If you don't have a job and you're looking for one my recommendation is to make your job, to look for jobs. So for 6 to 8 hours a day sit down and just apply to jobs non-Stop.
The way you would apply this Deep Focus concept is by removing all your distractions and solely focusing on applying for jobs. Now, this is the hard part, by removing distractions, I mean turning off your phone. Yes, that means no access to Facebook lol. Turn off your email notifications and if you can remove your body from anything that could distract you, do that too. Go to a Starbucks if you can or go to a local park and just dedicate all your time to focusing on that one action The concept is based on the fact that we are filled with distractions and this world is set up for you to multitask.
If you put all your attention to multiple things then you won't actually do your best work. But if you put all your attention to just doing one task, then you will produce the best work.
So, once again, to use my example, If you haven't updated your resume, take your laptop to a park, turn off your phone, and I mean fully turn it off, not just muting it, and just do your resume. Now once again. There is more to this concept which is why I recommend the book to read but to avoid getting into the weeds of the concept the main point is to pick something you need to do and schedule a time to put all your attention on one task and just do it. I love this concept because it helps you focus on that one goal.
To wrap this up, with everything happening around us, it’s very easy to procrastinate and not be on your grind. I mean, it’s discouraging if you got laid off and you don’t know how you are going to pay your rent. As silly as it sounds, sitting home watching Netflix feels like the best way to cope. I get it, but success is for those that want it bad. It’s so dangerously easy to get comfortable and relax. Fight procrastination by not waiting for passion and motivation, just do it. Fight procrastination by applying the 5-second rule and before you decide to relax and do what you need to do, count backward slowly, 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... and push yourself to tackle what you need to, or apply the Deep Work concept by removing all your distractions whether it’s the internet or your phone and applying all your focus to finishing a task. One thing I didn’t mention is to not lose focus on your “why”. You are doing this for your children; you are doing this for your parents, and or for yourself. Hustle and go get it. Make that money.

This is where I would typically finish the post, but I have an update on your stimulus money which also connects to what will become of your $600 unemployment money. So, as per CNET and all my other sources, there will be another round of stimulus money coming to you and they will start up the unemployment assistance program again. What we don’t know, but is highly likely is that the stimulus money will be $1200 per person again and the unemployment assistance of $600 will most likely drop to $200 a week. Now to what we don’t know yet. We don’t know when this bill will be approved. The real blue and red gangsters, the democrats, and republicans are fighting about the specifics of this bill and how much you will get. My guess is that they will come up with a decision within the next two weeks and you will get your money within two weeks of that. But a lot of this is up in the air still. My promise to you is that I will keep you updated as the information rolls out.
